If you follow My Retro Closet on Pinterest, you may have noticed I've been pinning a lot of vintage lingerie and nightwear advertisements recently. I fell down a rabbit hole of beautiful 1950s illustrations of glamorous women in babydolls, negligees and bed jackets, and I noticed most of what I was pinning were images from vintage Aldens catalogs. Then down another rabbit hole I fell, and I just had to share with you my favourite Aldens catalog images in a blog post.
I'll start with my absolute favourite. Jayne Mansfield is a huge inspiration to me when I'm designing, I suppose in a way she may be my vintage muse! I was searching for images on Pinterest when I came across the following...
"Beautiful dreamers picked by the famous star of screen and stage... Exciting sleepy-time fashions designed by famed G.M.C! Bewitching in pink-glinted black -- luscious in pastels -- you too can enjoy their glamour at Aldens low prices!"
Each under $6! How stunning are they? I love the baby pink and black combination, and that lace overlay is to die for! Here are some of my other favourite images from vintage 1950s & 1960s catalogs:
I love these slips, one day I'd love to explore making my own. The black one with the lace inserts - heaven!
Check out this range of gorgeous vintage girdles, the design and construction always amazes me, so much more goes in to them then modern reproduction styles.
I love the babydolls here on the left side. So glamourous, and you can easily copy the look with my Handmade by My Retro Closet range of nightwear! And check out those knickers that come with a record! How cute is that, you could get 6 pairs of adorable briefs with an Elvis Presley record. Love!
I hope you've enjoyed the first post in my Vintage Lingerie Advertisements blog series. They'll be lots more to come, including bullet bras and hosiery adverts. Stay tuned!
Thanks for reading, pinups!
